Stars come out for PokerStars Baltic Poker Festival

ps_news_thn.jpgLast year he dominated headlines at the World Series of Poker... now Finnish pro Ville Wahlbeck is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and will be making his debut appearance in PokerStars colors at the PokerStars Baltic Festival which kicks off tomorrow in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, writes Mad Harper.

The 34-year-old Finn shot to fame last summer when he cashed six times in the World Series of Poker, including winning the $10,000 Mixed Game event. He earned more than a million dollars during the WSOP and was runner-up for WSOP Player of the Year. A few months later he took down the High Roller event at the first PokerStars Baltic Poker Festival in October, and in February he scooped two trophies at the PokerStars Nordic Poker Awards in Copenhagen. Wahlbeck plays Day 1b of this year's €1,500 Baltic Festival Main Event.

Another member of the Nordic Team PokerStars team competing in Tallinn this week is Swedish pro William Thorson. He's due to play Day 1a of the Main Event while his brother Jens, who finished 22nd at EPT San Remo in April, and his father Olof are playing Day 1b. Also competing in Tallin are Team PokerStars SportStar Sami Selio, the Finnish Formula 1 powerboat champion, Team Pro Online member Grzegorz Mikielewicz, former NBA player Martin Muursepp and singer Maarja-LiisIlus.

A total of 134 players are already registered for the event, including 87 players who won their seat on PokerStars. The 2010 PokerStars Baltic Poker Festival, held in conjunction with Olympic Casino, runs until June 19 at the luxurious Swissôtel in the heart of the Estonian capital. Last year's festival brought together 307 players from 24 countries to create a prize pool of more than €300,000. The winner was Thomas Partridge from the UK who cashed more than €75,000.

WSOP Diary: Maria Mayrinck, something in the water

wsop2010_thn.jpgI'm convinced there's something in the water in Maria Mayrinck's household. Her boyfriend, David 'WhooooKidd' Baker, is ripping up the World Series of Poker, cashing four times already for more than $600,000, including a bracelet in the in $10,000 2-7 NL Draw Lowball. The man is running as hot as a tin roof in Las Vegas.

Team PokerStars Pro Mayrinck has been his biggest supporter - despite having to miss that Lowball final table as she was playing the LAPT event in Peru - and now it's her turn to put on a show. She finished well in the $2,500 No Limit six-handed event last night, bagging up 77,200 and nicely positioned towards the top of the 156 survivors from an impressive 1,245 entries.

Maria Mayrinck

It seems there really is something in the water. It's called good Karma. You see, Mayrinck is on an environmental mission here at the WSOP to conserve plastic. Thousands and thousands of plastic water bottles are used then dumped each day by players and she wants to cut that down.

"I really want to make players more aware in helping the environment and use less plastic water bottles during the Series," she said. "I've been Tweeting about it and said that I will be giving out bottles to people who ask me for one so they can fill up and take to/from home to the Rio with water so not waste so much plastic. This is something that is very important to me."

It's a worthy cause and one we support. Let's hope the water Karma continues through today's day two of the tournament. They're 30 short of the money right now.

Still in, and doing super well is Team PokerStars Pro Florian Langmann on 111,500, and Daniel Negreanu (53,000) who, as usual, attracted a big rail to his table. Johannes Steindl (30,600) avoided trouble as well.

This event drew a huge list of Team Pros. As well as the three above, all the following were unable to make progress: ElkY, Barry Greenstein, Hevad Khan, Andre Akkari, Vanessa Rousso, Lex Veldhuis, Alex Kravchenko, Jason Mercier, Gavin Griffin, Humberto Brenes and Bill Chen.

Veldhuis was a little unlucky, getting his money in with pocket kings against Jeremy Ausmus' ace-king - with an ace falling on the river. Brenes was all in with [9h][9d] and up against Ben Maerefat's [ah][qh], and the board ran [6d][7s][3s][qc][7c] to send The Shark home.

Meanwhile, in the first day of the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better, Team PokerStars Pro Marcel Luske bagged up 22,800, one of 208 from 644 starters to get through. Unfortunately for PokerStars, George Lind, Greg Raymer, JP Kelly, Chad Brown
Vanessa Rousso, Jason Mericer and Michael Keiner were not among them.

Finaly, respect to Sammy Farha who took down the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better event for $488,237 after a marathon final table that only wrapped up at around 7am this morning. Congratulations, too, to Brit James Dempsey who got $301,790 for second place, just short of winning his second WSOP bracelet within weeks.

BREAKING: NAPT announces new stop in Los Angeles

napt-thumb.jpgAfter three successful events already this season, the North American Poker Tour has added another stop: we're heading to Los Angeles!

The famous Bicycle Casino will host the event, scheduled for November 12-17. That leaves plenty of time for you to make plans and try to win your seat for much less than the $5,000 entry fee.

Fire up the PokerStars Lobby, go to Events >> NAPT and you'll soon see freeroll qualifiers for Los Angeles, giving you the chance to win a prize package that includes tournament buy-in, hotel accommodation and expenses. A full set of satellite events will be up closer to the event.

NAPT Season 1 got off to a cracking start at the PCA in January, followed by stops in Las Vegas in February, and a bumper event at the Mohegan Sun in April. Team PokerStars Pros were out in force for all three, with Jason Mercier winning the Mohegan Sun $25,000 Bounty Shootout after the Main Event had finished.

There's sure to be another star-studded turnout in sunny California. Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu said: "I've played at The Bike in the past and there is a strong local presence in LA. It's always really important for a tournament's success to have a strong core of local players as it gives even more incentive to travel to the events when you know there will be big money on the line. I'm looking forward to playing."

Others scheduled to play include Vanessa Rousso, Barry Greenstein, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, 2004 WSOP Main Event winner Greg Raymer, plus returning WSOP champion; 2009 Main Event winner Joe Cada.

Make sure you get there, too. For more information, go to the NAPT tour page.

Haig Kelegian, Managing Partner of The Bike, said: "We are very enthusiastic to secure the West Coast Tour stop. We clearly recognize the NAPT as the next major happening in the evolution of poker, and we have no doubt this Tour will entice and attract players from all over the world."

WSOP Diary: Who needs a rest anyway?

wsop2010_thn.jpgYou know what it's like: a friend invites you over for a quiet get-together and it turns out to be anything but. Far from a cosy chat around the kitchen table, it seems word got out and the house was rammed with the whole neighborhood showing up.

Yesterday was meant to be a nice, quiet day at the WSOP in the Rio. Quiet by Las Vegas standards, anyway. You see, no new events were scheduled to start and instead we'd continue with those already under way. On with the slippers, breathe out and... relax.

You know where this is heading. The Rio was as packed as ever, the rail as deep and the action as fast as any other day. A quiet Sunday? I don't think so. One man who looked like he could have done with a rest was Team PokerStars Pro Barry Greenstein, but then again he often has a hangdog expression...

barry_greenstein_wsop_tired.JPG

Barry Greenstein

Much of the noise during the afternoon was coming from the feature stage area, where the $1,000 Ladies No Limit World Championship was concluding. This tournament is always well supported, and the whoops and hollers after each pot was won ensured even Mr Greenstein stayed awake. Vanessa Hellebuyck from France went on to win it, bagging $192,132 in the process. It was France's first bracelet of the Series so far.

The mass turnout was provided by day two of the $1,000 No Limit event. By the end of the night there were still 222 left in it, but only two were PokerStars players: Holland's Fatima Moreira de Melo (19,800) and George Lind (9,200). Best to move on...

Team PokerStars Pro's interest in the $2,500 Limit six-handed had ended long before Dutch Boyd took it down, winning $234,065 and his second WSOP bracelet. Best to move on...

That left much of the focus on day two of the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship. That's where Barry Greenstein was to be found, along with fellow Team PokerStars Pros Chad Brown, Pat Pezzin, George Danzer and Alex Kravchenko. In the event, only Pezzin made it to the money, collecting $17,138 for his 26th-place finish. That was his fourth cash of the WSOP already, an impressive feat for the Canadian.

Danzer was a little unlucky on his exit hand. He and Steve Zolotow were heads-up on a board of [9h][js][kd][4s]. Danzer had flopped the nut straight with Q-Q-10-10 and bet after Zolotow checked. Zolotow then hit his perfect river, [qd]. He checked, Danzer moved all in, and Zolotow called with the new nuts, A-J-10-7.

george_danzer_wsop_sunday.jpg

George Danzer

If Danzer was a trifle unfortunate, Pezzin's exit was like a custard pie in the face, with extra cream. He was all-in on a flop of [4s][qh][kh] while holding [kd][kc][jd][js] for a juicy set of kings. 'Miami John' Cernuto called with [ad][5s][10c][2s] and found he needed one of just two remaining jacks for a straight. You guessed it, the [jc] came on the turn and Pezzin was out. Michael Chow leads the 23 survivors into day three.

Two more tournaments start today, the $2,500 NL Hold'em 6-max and the $1,500 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or better. Stay tuned.

Finally, a word on Team PokerStars Pro Humberto 'The Shark' Brenes. We've written before about his good work to save the oceans' shark population, and yesterday he took time out from playing the $1,000 event to sign t-shirts in aid of the cause. Well played, sir.

@GeorgeLindIII: Event 24, down to 5k now after hero call where he had to have nuts or bluff, and he had nuts, half hr left in the day, time to shove.

@aakarri (Andre Akkari): If it keep going like this, i'll play online soon, qq x ak :(...

... soon followed by....

@aakkari: Busted in 1k event and playing online now, home sweet home lol

@VictoriaCoren: Ooh, I'd forgotten I backed Germany at 16/1. Time to lay off at 9/1. Guaranteed profit on a sport about which I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
